1. Connectors encode relationships
A connector does more than join sentences: it tells the reader whether the next point is a cause, consequence, concession, contrast, condition or addition. Select the relationship first, then the connector. Check its word order and punctuation.
German exampleDie Stichprobe war klein. Dennoch lassen sich erste Tendenzen erkennen.
The sample was small. Nevertheless, some initial trends can be identified.
Because the sample was small, the results must be interpreted cautiously. Why it works: Dennoch is a conjunctive adverb and occupies a clause position; the finite verb remains second. Da introduces a subordinate clause, so war goes to the end of that clause.
2. Cause, consequence and purpose
Cause: weil, da, aufgrund, infolge. Consequence: sodass, daher, folglich, demzufolge. Purpose: damit and um … zu. These forms are not interchangeable: purpose describes an intended goal, while consequence describes an outcome.
German exampleDie Daten waren unvollständig, sodass keine abschließende Bewertung möglich war.
The data were incomplete, so a final assessment was not possible.
The data were supplemented so that the assessment would be based on a broader foundation.
The data were supplemented in order to improve the assessment. Why it works: Damit can introduce a clause with its own subject; um … zu normally shares its understood subject with the main clause. Do not use a purpose construction if you mean a result that was not intended.
3. Concession and contrast
Obwohl and auch wenn introduce subordinate clauses. Trotzdem and dennoch are adverbs. Während can mean “while” in time or introduce contrast; context determines the reading. Zwar … aber and einerseits … andererseits help structure balanced arguments.
Although costs have risen, the offer remains competitive.
Costs have indeed risen, but the offer remains competitive. German exampleWährend kurzfristige Lösungen schnell wirken, sind langfristige Maßnahmen nachhaltiger.
Whereas short-term solutions have a quick effect, long-term measures are more sustainable. Why it works: A concessive connector acknowledges a fact but signals that it does not prevent the main claim. A contrast simply places two facts or perspectives against each other.
4. Condition and restriction
Use these forms to state when a conclusion holds, and specify restrictions rather than implying universal validity.
Provided that funding is secured, the project can begin in spring.
The results are comparable unless the measurement conditions differ substantially. Why it works: A careful argument makes its conditions explicit. In academic writing, restrictions often increase credibility because they show exactly how far a claim can be generalised.
5. Text cohesion and reference
Readers need to know what pronouns and demonstratives refer to. Words such as dies, dadurch, damit, hierbei and insofern can connect ideas, but vague reference creates ambiguity. Repeat a key noun when necessary rather than forcing the reader to guess.
German exampleDie Behörde änderte das Verfahren. Dadurch verkürzte sich die Bearbeitungszeit.
The authority changed the procedure. As a result, processing time became shorter. German exampleDie Studie unterscheidet drei Gruppen. Diese unterscheiden sich hinsichtlich Alter und Berufserfahrung.
The study distinguishes three groups. These differ in age and professional experience. Why it works: Ask “What exactly does dies/dadurch/diese refer to?” If more than one antecedent is possible, name the concept explicitly: Diese Unterschiede … rather than Diese …
6. Build an argument, not a connector list
A strong paragraph typically states a claim, supports it with evidence or reasoning, acknowledges a limitation, and draws a proportionate conclusion. Connectors should reflect this logic. Do not use folglich unless the conclusion really follows from the preceding information.
German exampleDie Maßnahme senkt kurzfristig die Kosten. Allerdings berücksichtigt diese Berechnung die Folgekosten nicht. Daher ist eine langfristige Bewertung erforderlich.
The measure lowers costs in the short term. However, this calculation does not account for follow-up costs. Therefore, a long-term assessment is necessary. Why it works: The sequence works because the second sentence limits the first claim and the third derives a recommendation from that limitation. Each connector has a distinct job.
Check your understandingGuided practice with explained answers
Try each task before opening the suggested answer. More than one answer may be possible when it preserves the intended meaning and fits the context.
Cause or consequence?
Die Nachfrage stieg. Das Unternehmen erhöhte die Kapazität. Join with sodass.
Concession
The proposal is expensive. It could be effective. Use obwohl.
Purpose
Wir vereinfachen das Formular. Die Bearbeitung soll schneller werden. Use damit.
Make “es” precise.
(One possible revision.)
Transfer to real communicationWriting workshop
Write a 200-word argument about whether an organisation should adopt a new policy. Include one cause, one consequence, one concession, one condition and a concluding recommendation. Highlight each connector and annotate the relationship it expresses.
Self-assessment
- I can explain why the structure fits the meaning.
- I can distinguish it from a similar structure.
- I can correct at least one common error.
- I can use the structure in connected writing or speech.
- I can edit my work for clarity, register and accuracy.
