Important: this is an informal practice placement test, not an official CEFR certification or an official Goethe-Institut, telc, TestDaF or DSH result. It primarily checks selected grammar and vocabulary knowledge.
An online German level test is a convenient first check of your language knowledge. It can help you reflect on familiar grammar, vocabulary, sentence patterns and common expressions before you decide which learning materials or course to explore. This Fortgang Institut assessment offers separate practice question sets for six commonly used CEFR levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2.
The test is designed for self-directed learners who want an initial indication of their German grammar and vocabulary knowledge. It may be useful before joining a course, reviewing progress or planning further study for work, education or life in a German-speaking environment. Learners preparing for Goethe-Zertifikat, telc, TestDaF or DSH should remember that those examinations assess specific skills and formats beyond this multiple-choice quiz.
Depending on the selected level, the questions include grammar choices, vocabulary meaning, word order, connectors, sentence completion, idiomatic expressions and selected formal or academic language. Because this is a short multiple-choice assessment, it does not directly measure speaking, listening, pronunciation, extended writing or spontaneous interaction.
Use the score as a learning signal rather than a definitive certification. If a test feels difficult, revisit earlier topics and try again after practice. If it feels comfortable, consider exploring the next level while checking your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills too. A teacher or a more comprehensive assessment can help confirm the most suitable course placement.
