Your C1 learning pathway

Navigate the five master lessons

Use these units as an integrated pathway. You can study them in order or revisit a unit when a writing or speaking task reveals a gap.

1. Choose the form by communicative purpose

At C1, verb forms express stance as well as time. Ask whether you are reporting someone else’s claim, imagining an unreal situation, making a polite request, describing an event or emphasising a state/result.

German example
Die Sprecherin erklärt, die Verhandlungen seien noch nicht abgeschlossen.
The spokesperson explains that the negotiations have not yet been concluded.
German example
Wenn mehr Zeit zur Verfügung stünde, könnten wir die Daten genauer prüfen.
If more time were available, we could examine the data more closely.
Why it works: The first sentence uses Konjunktiv I to mark reported speech. The second uses Konjunktiv II for a hypothetical condition and its possible consequence.

2. Konjunktiv I in indirect speech

Konjunktiv I is often used in journalism, academic reporting and formal summaries to distinguish reported information from the writer’s own assertion. Common forms include er sei, sie habe, er werde and sie könne. If a Konjunktiv-I form is identical to the indicative, Konjunktiv II may be used to keep the distinction visible.

German example
Der Minister sagt, die Reform sei notwendig und werde bald umgesetzt.
The minister says that the reform is necessary and will be implemented soon.
German example
Die Forschenden erklärten, die Ergebnisse hätten sich bestätigt.
The researchers explained that the results had been confirmed.
Why it works: Do not treat Konjunktiv I as proof that a claim is false. It marks reported speech or distance, depending on context; it does not itself express disbelief.

3. Konjunktiv II: unreal, tentative and polite

Konjunktiv II can express counterfactual situations, imagined outcomes, advice and polite distance. Common forms include wäre, hätte, könnte, müsste, dürfte and würde + infinitive. Prefer a conventional form when it is idiomatic; würde is useful when a synthetic form sounds rare or awkward.

German example
Hätte die Behörde früher reagiert, wären die Kosten geringer ausgefallen.
Had the authority reacted earlier, the costs would have been lower.
German example
Ich würde vorschlagen, zunächst eine unabhängige Prüfung abzuwarten.
I would suggest waiting for an independent review first.
Why it works: In counterfactual past conditions, use hätte/wäre + past participle in the condition and hätte/wäre + past participle in the result. The result clause can also contain modal meaning: … hätte vermieden werden können.

4. Tense and reported time

Indirect speech does not require mechanical tense backshift in the English sense. Choose the form that makes the time relation clear. A reported statement about a current situation may use sei; a prior event may use habe/ sei + Partizip II or a suitable past form, depending on register and meaning.

German example
Sie berichtete, sie habe die Unterlagen bereits eingereicht.
She reported that she had already submitted the documents.
German example
Er sagte, die Sitzung finde am folgenden Tag statt.
He said that the meeting would take place the following day.
Why it works: Time expressions may need to change with the reporting perspective: morgen can become am folgenden Tag. Keep the timeline consistent rather than changing every verb automatically.

5. Passive voice and alternatives

Vorgangspassiv (werden + Partizip II) foregrounds an action or process. Zustandspassiv (sein + Partizip II) describes a resulting state. Alternatives such as man, sich lassen, sein + zu-infinitive and -bar adjectives can make formal writing less repetitive.

German example
Die Anträge werden derzeit geprüft.
The applications are currently being reviewed. (process)
German example
Die Anträge sind bereits geprüft.
The applications have already been reviewed / are in a reviewed state. (result)
German example
Die Ergebnisse lassen sich reproduzieren.
The results can be reproduced.
German example
Die Frist ist einzuhalten.
The deadline must be observed.
Why it works: Do not replace every passive with man. The choice changes focus and sometimes tone: man is agent-oriented and more direct; passive can foreground the process, object or institutional procedure.

6. Modal verbs and shades of certainty

Modal verbs express ability, obligation, permission, possibility or inference. In reported and formal contexts, they can also convey the speaker’s assessment: Das dürfte stimmen (that is probably correct), Das muss ein Irrtum sein (that must be a mistake). Interpret modal meaning in context.

German example
Die Abweichung dürfte auf einen Messfehler zurückzuführen sein.
The deviation is likely to be attributable to a measurement error.
German example
Die Unterlagen müssen bis Freitag eingereicht werden.
The documents must be submitted by Friday.
Why it works: The first dürfte signals a cautious inference, not permission. The second müssen expresses obligation. Distinguish modal meaning from the grammatical passive construction.

Guided practice with explained answers

Try each task before opening the suggested answer. More than one answer may be possible when it preserves the intended meaning and fits the context.

Reported speech

Die Leiterin sagt: „Die Ergebnisse sind belastbar.“ Begin with: Die Leiterin sagt, …

Suggested answer: Die Leiterin sagt, die Ergebnisse seien belastbar.
Counterfactual past

Wenn wir früher begonnen hätten, … (die Frist einhalten können)

Suggested answer: Wenn wir früher begonnen hätten, hätten wir die Frist einhalten können.
Process or state?

Describe an ongoing review and then the completed result.

Suggested answer: Die Unterlagen werden geprüft. / Die Unterlagen sind geprüft.
Cautious inference

Use dürfte to say that a delay is probably caused by technical problems.

Suggested answer: Die Verzögerung dürfte auf technische Probleme zurückzuführen sein.
Transfer to real communication

Writing workshop

Write a short formal report summarising three statements from a meeting. Use Konjunktiv I for reported claims, one Konjunktiv-II recommendation, and both process passive and a passive alternative. Make clear which claims are reported and which are your own conclusions.

Self-assessment

  • I can explain why the structure fits the meaning.
  • I can distinguish it from a similar structure.
  • I can correct at least one common error.
  • I can use the structure in connected writing or speech.
  • I can edit my work for clarity, register and accuracy.
