C1 grammar diagnostic

Choose the best answer for each question. Submit to receive your score, answer explanations and suggested revision areas. This short diagnostic is a learning guide, not a validated placement test.

10. Choose the most concise formal rewrite of: Weil die Nachfrage sank, änderte das Unternehmen den Plan.

11. ___ die Daten begrenzt sind, lassen sich erste Tendenzen erkennen.

12. Which sentence is the most appropriate for a formal report?

Interpretation: use your lowest-scoring topic areas as a revision guide. A short quiz cannot determine C1 proficiency on its own; reading, listening, writing and speaking need separate assessment.

Part II · Five master lessons

Understand the grammar behind advanced German

These compact master notes introduce key C1 structures. Study the examples, then use the practice tasks and workshop sections to apply them.

Master Lesson 01

Complex sentence structures and word order

At C1, the goal is not simply to make sentences longer. It is to organise information so the relationship between ideas is clear and the emphasis is deliberate.

1. Subordinate clauses and the sentence bracket

German: Obwohl die Studie umfangreich ist, bleiben einige Fragen offen.
English: Although the study is extensive, some questions remain open.

In a standard subordinate clause introduced by obwohl, weil, dass, während, sofern or damit, the finite verb normally appears at the end. When the subordinate clause comes first, the main clause begins with its finite verb after the comma.

German: Obwohl die Studie umfangreich ist, bleiben einige Fragen offen.
English: Although the study is extensive, some questions remain open.

2. Relative clauses and case

The relative pronoun agrees in gender and number with its antecedent, but its case is determined by its role inside the relative clause.

Nominative: Die Forscherin, die das Projekt leitet, veröffentlicht die Ergebnisse. The researcher who leads the project publishes the results.
Accusative: Das Verfahren, das wir verwenden, ist zuverlässig. The method that we use is reliable.
Preposition: Das Konzept, durch das sich die Abläufe vereinfachen ließen, wurde überarbeitet. The concept through which the processes could be simplified was revised.

3. Infinitive clauses and participle constructions

Infinitive: Um die Vergleichbarkeit zu gewährleisten, wurden alle Daten nach demselben Verfahren erhoben.
To ensure comparability, all data were collected using the same method.
Participle: Die im vergangenen Jahr erhobenen Daten sind weiterhin relevant.
The data collected last year remain relevant.
Precision warning: Do not force a participle construction simply to sound advanced. If the time relationship or agent becomes unclear, a finite subordinate clause is usually better.

Practice 1 — Choose the correct structure

Practice 2 — Transform

Combine these sentences using a relative clause: Die Methode ist zuverlässig. Wir haben die Methode im Pilotprojekt getestet.

Suggested answer
Die Methode, die wir im Pilotprojekt getestet haben, ist zuverlässig. The relative pronoun is accusative in the relative clause because it is the object of testen.
Master Lesson 02

Advanced verbs, Konjunktiv and passive voice

1. Konjunktiv I in reported speech

Konjunktiv I helps mark reported information as someone else's statement rather than the writer's direct assertion. In practice, the choice of form depends on the reporting verb, person and whether the Konjunktiv I form is distinct from the indicative.

Direct: Die Sprecherin sagt: „Die Verhandlungen sind abgeschlossen.“
Reported: Die Sprecherin sagt, die Verhandlungen seien abgeschlossen.
The spokesperson says that the negotiations have been concluded.

2. Konjunktiv II for hypothetical meaning and distance

German: Wenn mehr Zeit zur Verfügung stünde, könnte das Team weitere Daten erheben.
If more time were available, the team could collect further data.

Konjunktiv II can express hypothetical situations, polite distance and unreal conditions. Some forms are shared with the past indicative or sound formal; würde + infinitive is common when a synthetic form is unfamiliar or ambiguous, but it is not always the most elegant option.

3. Passive voice and alternatives

Process passive: Die Anträge werden geprüft. The applications are being reviewed.
Stative passive: Die Anträge sind geprüft. The applications are checked / in a checked state; context determines the natural interpretation.
Alternative: Die Anträge lassen sich online einreichen. The applications can be submitted online.

Other alternatives include sein + zu + infinitive for obligation/possibility in formal contexts, and man when the agent is generic. These forms are not always interchangeable; check whether the meaning is ability, possibility, obligation or a process.

Practice 1 — Report the statement

Rewrite in reported speech: Der Minister sagt: „Die Entscheidung ist endgültig.“

Suggested answer
Der Minister sagt, die Entscheidung sei endgültig.

Practice 2 — Choose the correct form

Wenn die Finanzierung gesichert ___, könnte das Projekt fortgesetzt werden.

Master Lesson 03

Nominalisation and academic German

Nominal style can compress information and suit formal reports, academic prose and administrative writing. However, excessive nominalisation can obscure the actor and make a text unnecessarily heavy.

1. Turn a clause into a noun phrase

Verbal: Weil die Nachfrage zurückging, änderte das Unternehmen seine Strategie.
Nominal: Aufgrund des Nachfragerückgangs änderte das Unternehmen seine Strategie.
Because demand fell, the company changed its strategy.

2. Noun–verb combinations

eine Entscheidung treffen = to make a decision
Berücksichtigung finden = to be taken into account
zur Verfügung stehen = to be available
in Betracht ziehen = to consider

These combinations are common in formal German, but the simpler verb is often clearer: entscheiden instead of eine Entscheidung treffen, where context and register allow it.

3. Participles as adjectives

Participle I: die steigenden Kosten — the rising costs
Participle II: die veröffentlichten Ergebnisse — the published results

Participial adjectives can condense relative clauses, but endings must agree with gender, number, case and determiner type.

Practice 1 — Nominalise

Rewrite formally: Weil die Kosten gestiegen sind, wurde das Projekt verschoben.

Suggested answer
Aufgrund des Kostenanstiegs wurde das Projekt verschoben. Also possible: Wegen des Anstiegs der Kosten ...

Practice 2 — Make the sentence clearer

Rewrite without the noun chain: Die Durchführung der Überprüfung der Umsetzung der neuen Vorgaben erfolgte durch die Abteilung.

Suggested answer
Die Abteilung überprüfte, ob die neuen Vorgaben umgesetzt wurden. This version is shorter and makes the agent explicit.
Master Lesson 04

Connectors, argumentation and text cohesion

At C1, connectors should express the exact logical relationship—not simply make the text sound formal.

RelationshipUseful connectorExample

Build an argument with a counterargument

Eine flexible Lösung wäre zwar kostengünstiger; allerdings müsste sichergestellt werden, dass die Qualität nicht darunter leidet. Entscheidend ist daher, unter welchen Bedingungen das Modell eingesetzt wird.

Effective argumentation states a claim, supports it with a reason or example, acknowledges a limitation and explains why the conclusion still follows. Cohesion also depends on clear pronoun reference and repeated key terms—not connectors alone.

Practice — Select the best connector

Die Methode ist aufwendig. ___ liefert sie besonders präzise Ergebnisse.

Master Lesson 05

Precision, register and grammatical nuance

1. Fixed prepositions and valency

Learn prepositions as part of a word's pattern, including the case that follows. The preposition often cannot be predicted reliably from English.

abhängen von + Dativ — Die Ergebnisse hängen von mehreren Faktoren ab.
sich interessieren für + Akkusativ — Sie interessiert sich für die Forschung.
teilnehmen an + Dativ — Viele Studierende nehmen an der Diskussion teil.
beitragen zu + Dativ — Die Maßnahme trägt zur Verbesserung bei.

2. Negation and scope

Nicht alle Teilnehmenden stimmten zu. = Not all participants agreed.
Alle Teilnehmenden stimmten nicht zu. = Often interpreted as none agreed, but can be ambiguous; choose a clearer formulation.

Place nicht according to what is being negated. If the intended scope is unclear, rewrite the sentence rather than relying on intonation alone.

3. Register: formal without being inflated

Informal: Viele Leute finden die Regel ziemlich schlecht.
Formal: Viele Betroffene bewerten die Regelung kritisch.
Many affected people view the regulation critically.
C1 principle: precision is not the same as maximum complexity. Choose the structure that conveys the intended relationship accurately and naturally.

Practice — Improve register

Rewrite: Die neue Regel ist irgendwie ziemlich blöd und macht mehr Arbeit.

Suggested answer
Die neue Regelung wird kritisch bewertet, da sie einen zusätzlichen Arbeitsaufwand verursacht.
C1 reference library

High-value structures: form, meaning and use

Use these comparisons to choose grammar by meaning rather than memorising isolated lists. Examples are illustrative; context and register can affect the most natural choice.

1. Concession, contrast and correction

StructureGrammar patternExampleUse
obwohlSubordinate clause; verb-finalObwohl die Kosten steigen, wird investiert.Concession inside one sentence
trotz + GenitivNoun phraseTrotz steigender Kosten wird investiert.Compressed, often formal
dennoch / trotzdemMain clause; finite verb in position 2Die Kosten steigen. Dennoch wird investiert.Connects independent clauses
hingegen / dagegenAdverbial contrastDie erste Option ist günstig; die zweite hingegen ist nachhaltiger.Contrasts two items
vielmehrCorrective or redirecting adverbEs geht nicht um Tempo, vielmehr um Verlässlichkeit.Refines or replaces an interpretation
Editing rule: do not write obwohl ... dennoch automatically as a double connector. It can be grammatical in some constructions, but often one connector is enough. Check the intended contrast and sentence architecture.

2. Cause, result, purpose and condition

MeaningUseful formsExampleCommon trap
Causeweil, da, aufgrund + Genitiv, wegen + GenitivAufgrund der unklaren Datenlage wurde die Entscheidung vertagt.aufgrund takes a noun phrase, not a finite clause
Resultsodass, daher, folglich, infolgedessenDie Daten waren lückenhaft, sodass keine sichere Schlussfolgerung möglich war.sodass is subordinate; daher is an adverb
Purposedamit, um ... zuDie Angaben wurden anonymisiert, damit die Personen geschützt bleiben.um ... zu normally shares its understood subject with the main clause
Conditionwenn, sofern, falls, vorausgesetzt, dassSofern die Mittel bewilligt werden, beginnt die nächste Phase.Distinguish a real condition from a hypothetical one
Hypothesiswenn + Konjunktiv IIWenn mehr Mittel zur Verfügung stünden, ließe sich die Studie erweitern.Keep the hypothetical meaning consistent

3. Konjunktiv I, Konjunktiv II and distance

PurposeExampleInterpretation
Reported statementDie Sprecherin erklärte, die Lage sei stabil.Marks reported information; it does not itself prove or disprove the claim.
Reported past eventEr sagte, die Sitzung habe bereits begonnen.Konjunktiv I perfect: auxiliary in Konjunktiv I + past participle.
Hypothetical conditionWäre die Datenbasis größer, wären die Ergebnisse belastbarer.Imagined or unreal situation.
Polite distanceKönnten Sie den Vorschlag näher erläutern?Softens a request without making it vague.
Alternative when K I is ambiguousSie sagten, sie hätten keine Zeit.Konjunktiv II may distinguish reported speech from indicative in context.

Reported-speech conventions vary by genre. In formal reporting, preserve the source's meaning and do not use Konjunktiv as a substitute for checking evidence.

4. Passive voice and alternatives are not identical

FormExampleWhat it foregrounds
Process passive: werden + Partizip IIDie Anträge werden geprüft.The process or action
State passive: sein + Partizip IIDie Anträge sind geprüft.A resulting state; some examples need context to sound natural
sich lassen + InfinitivDie Daten lassen sich vergleichen.Possibility or feasibility
sein + zu + InfinitivDie Unterlagen sind bis Freitag einzureichen.Requirement or possibility, depending on context
man constructionMan prüft die Anträge in zwei Schritten.Generic agent; often more direct
Meaning check: a passive sentence does not always have the same meaning as its alternative. Ask whether you mean a process, a result, possibility, obligation or a generic action.

5. Nominal style without noun overload

Clause-based:
Weil die Kosten gestiegen sind, wurde das Projekt verschoben.
Because costs increased, the project was postponed.
Nominal style:
Aufgrund des Kostenanstiegs wurde das Projekt verschoben.
Because of the increase in costs, the project was postponed.

Nominalisation is useful when the event is already known or when a formal report needs compact information. Prefer a verb when it clarifies who did what.

Overloaded: Die Durchführung der Überprüfung der Umsetzung erfolgte durch das Team.
Clearer: Das Team überprüfte, ob die Vorgaben umgesetzt wurden.

6. Valency and fixed prepositions

Learn the verb or adjective together with its preposition and case. This is a vocabulary-and-grammar pattern, not a rule that can reliably be translated word for word from English.

PatternExampleMeaning

7. Relative clauses: identify case from the clause

The relative pronoun matches the antecedent in gender and number. Its case is determined by its grammatical role inside the relative clause.

Nominative: Die Expertin, die den Bericht verfasst hat, stellte die Ergebnisse vor.
The expert who wrote the report presented the results.
Accusative: Der Bericht, den die Expertin verfasst hat, liegt vor.
The report that the expert wrote is available.
Dative: Das Team, dem die Leitung vertraut, übernimmt die Aufgabe.
The team that management trusts is taking on the task.
Preposition: Das Verfahren, mit dem die Daten ausgewertet wurden, ist transparent.
The method with which the data were analysed is transparent.

8. Cohesion and reference: make the logic visible

Advanced writing depends on more than connectors. Readers must be able to identify what pronouns, demonstratives and summary expressions refer to.

Unclear: Die Behörde änderte die Richtlinie, nachdem das Unternehmen widersprochen hatte. Dies wurde kritisiert.
Clearer: Die Änderung der Richtlinie wurde kritisiert, weil sie ohne ausreichende Konsultation erfolgt war.

Use dies, dadurch, dabei, damit, woraufhin and similar forms only when the reference is clear. Repeat a key noun when ambiguity would affect the argument.

Application studio

Transform, diagnose and improve

Try each task before opening the suggested solution. These activities practise deliberate grammatical choice rather than isolated memorisation.

Task 1 · Compress without losing meaning

Rewrite in a formal nominal style: Da die Teilnehmendenzahl zurückging, musste die Organisation das Konzept überarbeiten.

Compare with a suggested answer
Aufgrund des Rückgangs der Teilnehmendenzahl musste die Organisation das Konzept überarbeiten. Other natural versions are possible. Check that the cause remains clear and the genitive construction is correct.

Task 2 · Restore the verb position

Correct this sentence: Obwohl die Ergebnisse sind nicht eindeutig, lässt sich eine Tendenz erkennen.

Suggested answer
Obwohl die Ergebnisse nicht eindeutig sind, lässt sich eine Tendenz erkennen. The finite verb moves to the end of the subordinate clause.

Task 3 · Choose the intended meaning

Complete the sentence with a form that expresses a hypothetical condition: Wenn die Ergebnisse belastbarer ___, könnte die Empfehlung eindeutiger ausfallen.

Task 4 · Upgrade the argument

Write 120–160 words on this question: Sollten Unternehmen mehr Homeoffice ermöglichen? Include a clear position, two reasons, a concession, a specific example and a conclusion.

Open the structure checklist
  • Opening: define the issue and state your position.
  • Reason 1: develop one claim with an explanation or example.
  • Concession: acknowledge a genuine limitation using zwar ... jedoch, obwohl or allerdings.
  • Reason 2: connect it to a consequence using folglich, dadurch or infolgedessen.
  • Conclusion: qualify your recommendation; avoid introducing a new argument.

After writing, underline every connector and check whether each one expresses the intended relationship.

Part III · Practice engine

Mixed C1 practice

Use this mixed set to test whether you can choose a structure based on meaning and context.

1. ___ der schwierigen Ausgangslage wurde eine Lösung gefunden.

2. Es wurde beschlossen, dass die Frist ___.

3. Die Forscher erklärten, die Ergebnisse ___ eindeutig.

4. ___ der begrenzten Datenlage sollte die Schlussfolgerung vorsichtig formuliert werden.

5. Je klarer die Kriterien sind, desto ___ fällt die Bewertung aus.

Part IV · Integrated workshop

Turn grammar into performance

These labs combine grammar analysis, transformation, writing, speaking and editing. Keep your own answers before opening the suggested solutions.

Lab 1 · Read like a grammarian

Analyse a connected text

English sense: Flexible work can improve work–life balance, but its benefit depends on implementation. Without clear boundaries, employees may become more independent in location but still be expected to remain constantly available. Organisations should make expectations transparent and evaluate outcomes rather than mere presence.

Analysis tasks

  1. Identify the concessive clause.
  2. Find two passive constructions.
  3. Explain the function of vielmehr.
  4. Write one new sentence using statt ... zu that fits the text.
Suggested answers
  1. Obwohl flexible Arbeitsmodelle ... zu verbessern.
  2. als Möglichkeit dargestellt werden; Grenzen ... nicht festgelegt werden; also Erwartungen transparent formuliert werden.
  3. Vielmehr redirects attention to the more important point or alternative.
  4. Example: Führungskräfte sollten Ergebnisse bewerten, statt die bloße Anwesenheit zu kontrollieren.
Lab 2 · Sentence transformation

Preserve meaning, change structure

  1. Da die Nachfrage zurückgegangen ist, muss das Unternehmen seine Strategie ändern. (Nominal style)
  2. Obwohl die Maßnahme teuer ist, könnte sie langfristig Vorteile bringen. (Use trotz)
  3. Die Behörde hat die Regeln geändert. Viele Menschen kritisieren das. (Combine with a concessive connector)
  4. Die Daten, die im letzten Jahr erhoben wurden, sind weiterhin relevant. (Use a participle construction)
Suggested solutions

Integrated C1 capstone

Bring together reading comprehension, grammar analysis, writing, speaking and editing. Complete the task without consulting the model answers first.

Source text

Part A · Reading and grammar analysis

  1. Summarise the central claim in one sentence.
  2. Explain the function of Dennoch and vielmehr.
  3. Identify one passive construction and explain its focus.
  4. Find a relative clause and identify its antecedent.
  5. Explain the condition introduced by Voraussetzung dafür ist allerdings, dass ....
Suggested analysis
  1. The text argues that the value of digital or in-person teaching depends on learning goals and purposeful design rather than one format being universally superior.
  2. Dennoch signals contrast; vielmehr redirects attention to the more relevant criterion.
  3. Bildung zugänglicher gestaltet werden kann is passive; the focus is on the possibility of improving access rather than the agent.
  4. durch das Bildung zugänglicher gestaltet werden kann refers to Instrument.
  5. Teachers must plan learning activities purposefully rather than merely use technical tools.

Part B · Writing

Write 220–280 words on: Welche Rolle sollte digitales Lernen in der Zukunft spielen? Include a counterargument, a concession, a conditional structure and a clear conclusion.

Part C · Speaking

Give a two-minute presentation based on your response. Then answer aloud:

  • Unter welchen Bedingungen ist digitales Lernen besonders sinnvoll?
  • Welche Nachteile sollten nicht unterschätzt werden?
  • Wie könnte eine ausgewogene Lösung aussehen?
