Entschuldigung, von welchem Gleis fährt der Zug ab?
Eine Fahrkarte nach Berlin, bitte.
Wann kommt der Zug an?
Travel and transport are useful themes for A2 German because they bring together everyday questions, time expressions, directions and polite requests. Practise words for trains, buses, stations, tickets and accommodation alongside short phrases you can use to ask for help or understand an announcement.
Start with core words such as der Bahnhof (train station), die Fahrkarte (ticket), der Fahrplan (timetable), die Haltestelle (stop) and die Unterkunft (accommodation). Learn them in short phrases and complete questions rather than as isolated translations.
Group the words by situation: before the journey, at the station, during the trip and at your destination. Learn the article with every noun—for example, der Zug, die Haltestelle and das Ticket. Then practise asking a question and understanding a short answer.
Begin with transport, stations, tickets, timetables, directions, accommodation and common travel questions. Learn words such as der Zug, der Bus, die Fahrkarte and der Bahnhof in short sentences.
Useful questions include Wo ist …? (Where is …?), Wie komme ich zum Bahnhof? (How do I get to the train station?) and Ist es weit? (Is it far?). Remember to begin politely with Entschuldigung.
Der Verkehr refers to traffic or transport, while die Reise means a journey or trip. Reisen can also be the verb “to travel”.
Role-play situations such as buying a ticket, asking when a bus leaves, checking into a hotel and explaining that you cannot find your platform. Practise both the question and a possible answer.
