1. Overview of education in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has a long-established school education system with government, private and international schools. The national school route is commonly organised into primary education, junior secondary, senior secondary and collegiate-level study. Students may follow the national curriculum and sit national examinations, while some schools offer international programmes.

Education policy and administration are handled by national and provincial authorities. School structure, subject offerings and admission arrangements can vary by school type and location.

Important: This page is an introductory guide. Confirm current curriculum, admission and examination requirements with the relevant school or official authority.

2. School stages and grades

StageTypical gradesApproximate ageFocus
PrimaryGrades 1–5About 5–10Foundational literacy, numeracy and broad learning.
Junior secondaryGrades 6–9About 11–14Wider subject study and preparation for secondary examinations.
Senior secondaryGrades 10–11About 15–16Study leading to the GCE Ordinary Level (O Level) examination.
Collegiate / advanced levelGrades 12–13About 17–18Specialised study leading to the GCE Advanced Level (A Level).

Grade labels and progression may vary across programmes and institutions. Ages are approximate.

Primary education

Students build core skills and study a range of foundational subjects. Grade 5 is commonly associated with a national scholarship examination, which may be used for selected educational opportunities.

Junior secondary

Grades 6–9 broaden the curriculum. Students continue general education before moving toward O Level preparation.

O Level stage

Students commonly prepare for the GCE Ordinary Level examination at the end of Grade 11, under the applicable national or international programme.

A Level stage

Students who continue to collegiate study usually select subject streams and prepare for the GCE Advanced Level examination.

3. School types and curricula

Government schools

Many schools are government-managed and teach through Sinhala or Tamil, following the national curriculum.

Private schools

Private institutions may offer national curriculum programmes or other approved and recognised curricula. Their language of instruction and fees differ.

International schools

Some schools follow international programmes, such as Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel, and prepare students for international O Level and A Level examinations.

National-language streams

Students may study in Sinhala- or Tamil-medium settings. English is also taught and may be used as the language of instruction in some schools.

When comparing schools, check the curriculum, language of instruction, examination authority, recognition and eligibility for the next stage of study.

4. Major examinations and qualifications

Grade 5 Scholarship Examination

A national examination associated with Grade 5. Results may be used for scholarship opportunities or school placement according to current rules.

GCE O Level

The General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level is a key secondary qualification, commonly taken after Grade 11 in the national route.

GCE A Level

The General Certificate of Education Advanced Level is taken after further study, commonly in Grades 12–13. Subject choices can influence higher-education options.

International qualifications

Students in international schools may take qualifications such as Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel O Levels and A Levels, subject to their programme.

Examination registration, subjects, dates and scoring requirements should be confirmed through the Department of Examinations or the relevant international examination provider.

5. What happens after school?

  • After O Level: students may continue to A Level study, select a suitable vocational programme or consider other recognised routes.
  • After A Level: students may apply to universities or other higher-education institutions, based on eligibility and selection criteria.
  • Technical and vocational study: skills-based programmes can provide routes to employment or further qualifications.
  • Study abroad: overseas admission depends on the receiving institution’s academic, subject, language and documentation requirements.

Admission to higher education is competitive and programme-specific. Applicants should consult the target institution for its current entry criteria.
