6. Saying and Writing Dates in German

Dates in German are commonly written in the order day.month.year, for example 03.10.2026 (3 October 2026). In formal writing, the day is often followed by a period because it is an ordinal number.

Asking about the date

Welches Datum ist heute? What is the date today?

Den wievielten haben wir heute? What date is it today? (colloquial)

Heute ist der dritte Oktober. Today is the third of October.

Ordinal numbers used for dates

For dates, German uses ordinal numbers. In written dates, they are usually shown as numerals followed by a period: 1., 2., 3., 4. When read aloud, the ordinal ending depends on the grammar of the sentence.

NumberOrdinalExample date
1ersteder erste Mai
2zweiteder zweite Mai
3dritteder dritte Mai
4vierteder vierte Mai
5fünfteder fünfte Mai
6sechsteder sechste Mai
7siebteder siebte Mai
8achteder achte Mai
9neunteder neunte Mai
10zehnteder zehnte Mai
11elfteder elfte Mai
12zwölfteder zwölfte Mai
13dreizehnteder dreizehnte Mai
20zwanzigsteder zwanzigste Mai
21einundzwanzigsteder einundzwanzigste Mai
30 dreißigsteder dreißigste Mai
31einunddreißigsteder einunddreißigste Mai
Grammar distinction: Compare Heute ist der erste Mai. (Today is the first of May.) with Ich habe am ersten Mai frei. (I have the day off on the first of May.) After am, the ordinal takes -en: am ersten Mai, am dritten Oktober.
