What will you learn?

In German, the same time can often be expressed in two ways. For example, 16:30 can be said as sechzehn Uhr dreißig in an official context or halb fünf in everyday conversation. This guide shows you how both systems work and when to use them.

1. How to ask the time in German

GermanEnglishUse
Wie spät ist es?What time is it?Most common everyday question
Wie viel Uhr ist es?What time is it?Also common and correct
Können Sie mir bitte sagen, wie spät es ist?Could you please tell me what time it is?Polite / formal
Hast du kurz die Uhrzeit?Do you have the time?Casual, informal
Um wie viel Uhr beginnt der Film?At what time does the film start?Asking for the time of an event
Wann fährt der Zug ab?When does the train leave?Asking when something happens
Difference: Wie spät ist es? asks what time it is now. Um wie viel Uhr ...? asks at what exact time an event is scheduled to happen.

How to answer

  • Es ist neun Uhr. — It is nine o'clock.
  • Es ist halb drei. — It is half past two (2:30).
  • Es ist vierzehn Uhr fünfundzwanzig. — It is 14:25.

2. Numbers you need to tell the time

Learn these numbers first. For clock time, numbers from 1 to 12 are especially important for everyday speech; the 24-hour system uses numbers up to 23 for hours.

NumberGermanNumberGerman
1eins13dreizehn
2zwei14vierzehn
3drei15fünfzehn
4vier16sechzehn

8acht20zwanzig
9neun21einundzwanzig
10zehn22zweiundzwanzig
11elf23dreiundzwanzig
12zwölf30dreißig
Pronunciation note: Uhr sounds approximately like “oor” (with a German vowel), and fünf contains the German ü sound. Listen to or practise the numbers aloud as you study.

3. Official time: the 24-hour clock

Official time is used for schedules, timetables, appointments, announcements, business hours, and other situations where precision matters. It is also called the 24-hour clock.

Basic structure

Say the hour, then Uhr, then the minutes:

14:25 → vierzehn Uhr fünfundzwanzig

Es ist vierzehn Uhr fünfundzwanzig. — It is 14:25 (2:25 p.m.).

Digital timeGermanEnglish
06:00sechs Uhrsix o'clock
08:05acht Uhr fünfeight oh five
09:10neun Uhr zehnnine ten
10:15zehn Uhr fünfzehnten fifteen
11:20elf Uhr zwanzigeleven twenty
12:30zwölf Uhr dreißigtwelve thirty
13:45dreizehn Uhr fünfundvierzigthirteen forty-five / 1:45 p.m.
16:05sechzehn Uhr fünfsixteen oh five / 4:05 p.m.
18:40achtzehn Uhr vierzigeighteen forty / 6:40 p.m.
21:55einundzwanzig Uhr fünfundfünfzigtwenty-one fifty-five / 9:55 p.m.

Important: how to say minutes with a zero

  • 07:03 → sieben Uhr drei
  • 10:04 → zehn Uhr vier
  • 12:08 → zwölf Uhr acht

In spoken German, you do not normally need to say null before a single-digit minute. The digital display may show a leading zero, but the spoken form can simply be Uhr drei, Uhr vier, or Uhr acht.

When the time is exactly on the hour

Use the hour followed by Uhr:

  • 05:00 → fünf Uhr
  • 12:00 → zwölf Uhr
  • 20:00 → zwanzig Uhr
Midnight and noon: 00:00 is null Uhr or Mitternacht. 12:00 is zwölf Uhr or Mittag, depending on the context. For schedules, 00:00 Uhr and 12:00 Uhr are clear.

4. Informal time: everyday German

In everyday conversation, speakers often use a 12-hour-style system with expressions such as halb, Viertel nach, and Viertel vor. The key is to think of the next hour when you hear halb.

O'clock: Uhr

For exact hours, Uhr is used in both official and everyday speech:

  • 08:00 → acht Uhr
  • 13:00 → ein Uhr (everyday context) or dreizehn Uhr (official)
  • 19:00 → sieben Uhr (everyday context) or neunzehn Uhr (official)

Nach = past / after the hour

For minutes after an hour, say the minute followed by nach and the current hour.

TimeGermanThink of it as
07:05fünf nach siebenfive past seven
07:10zehn nach siebenten past seven
07:15Viertel nach siebenquarter past seven
07:20zwanzig nach siebentwenty past seven
07:25fünfundzwanzig nach siebentwenty-five past seven

Vor = to / before the next hour

For minutes before the next hour, say the minutes remaining, then vor and the next hour.

TimeGermanThink of it as
07:35fünfundzwanzig vor achttwenty-five to eight
07:40zwanzig vor achttwenty to eight
07:45Viertel vor achtquarter to eight
07:50zehn vor achtten to eight
07:55fünf vor achtfive to eight

Halb = half to the next hour

This is one of the most important differences between German and English. In German, halb acht means halfway to eight, or 7:30—not 8:30.

TimeGermanEnglish
06:30halb siebenhalf past six
07:30halb achthalf past seven
08:30halb neunhalf past eight
12:30halb einshalf past twelve
16:30halb fünfhalf past four
21:30halb zehnhalf past nine
Memory trick: halb acht means “halfway to eight.” The next hour is eight, so the time is 7:30. Always ask yourself: “Halfway to which hour?”

Viertel = quarter

In many regions, Viertel nach and Viertel vor are used:

  • 10:15 → Viertel nach zehn
  • 10:45 → Viertel vor elf

Regional variations also exist, especially in parts of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. A learner can confidently use Viertel nach and Viertel vor as broadly understood forms, while being aware that other regional expressions may be heard.

5. A practical pattern for informal minutes

Use this reference for the common expressions. Informal time often follows a quarter-hour pattern, but other minutes can be expressed with nach and vor too.

MinutesExample timeGerman expression
:0009:00neun Uhr
:0509:05fünf nach neun
:1009:10zehn nach neun
:1509:15Viertel nach neun
:2009:20zwanzig nach neun
:2509:25fünf vor halb zehn or fünfundzwanzig nach neun
:3009:30halb zehn
:3509:35fünf nach halb zehn or fünfundzwanzig vor zehn
:4009:40zwanzig vor zehn
:4509:45Viertel vor zehn
:5009:50zehn vor zehn
:5509:55fünf vor zehn
About :25 and :35: Expressions such as fünf vor halb zehn (9:25) and fünf nach halb zehn (9:35) are common in colloquial speech in many regions. If you're a beginner, the clearer forms fünfundzwanzig nach neun and fünfundzwanzig vor zehn are also good to learn.

6. Adding morning, afternoon, and evening

Because informal time often uses a 12-hour clock, context helps clarify whether a time is in the morning or evening. You can add these words:

GermanEnglishExample
morgensin the morningIch stehe um sieben Uhr morgens auf.
vormittagsin the late morning / before noonDer Termin ist um elf Uhr vormittags.
mittagsat noon / around lunchtimeWir essen um zwölf Uhr mittags.
nachmittagsin the afternoonIch lerne um drei Uhr nachmittags.
abendsin the eveningDer Film beginnt um acht Uhr abends.
nachtsat nightDer Zug kommt um zwei Uhr nachts an.

Examples using informal time:

  • 7:00 a.m. → sieben Uhr morgens
  • 3:00 p.m. → drei Uhr nachmittags
  • 8:00 p.m. → acht Uhr abends
  • 9:30 p.m. → halb zehn abends
For timetables and formal appointments, using the 24-hour time is usually the clearest way to avoid ambiguity: Der Zug fährt um 20:15 Uhr ab.

7. When to use official or informal time

SituationTypical choiceExample
Train, bus, or flight timetableOfficial 24-hour timeDer Zug fährt um 17:42 Uhr.
Work meeting / appointmentOfficial or clear spoken formDer Termin ist um 14:30 Uhr.
Talking with friendsInformal timeTreffen wir uns um halb sieben?
School scheduleOften 24-hour in written scheduleDer Unterricht beginnt um 08:15 Uhr.
Everyday conversationInformal timeEs ist Viertel nach vier.
Announcements / business hoursOfficial 24-hour timeWir schließen um 18:00 Uhr.

One time, two ways

13:00 — dreizehn Uhrein Uhr (context: 1 p.m.)
14:15 — vierzehn Uhr fünfzehnViertel nach zwei
15:30 — fünfzehn Uhr dreißighalb vier
17:45 — siebzehn Uhr fünfundvierzigViertel vor sechs
20:05 — zwanzig Uhr fünffünf nach acht (context: evening)

8. Many examples: read, say, and convert

Try saying each time in both systems. The informal version assumes the context makes morning or evening clear.

10. Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Incorrect / confusingCorrectWhy?
halb acht = 8:30halb acht = 7:30Halb points toward the next hour.
Viertel nach acht = 8:45Viertel nach acht = 8:15Nach means after / past.
Viertel vor acht = 8:15Viertel vor acht = 7:45Vor means before the next hour.
Using ein Uhr for a formal 13:00 scheduledreizehn UhrUse 24-hour time to make schedules unambiguous.
Um halb drei UhrUm halb dreiIn this informal expression, Uhr is normally omitted.
Es ist um acht Uhr.Es ist acht Uhr.Use um for the time of an event, not to state the current time.
Confusing Wann? with Wie spät?Wie spät ist es? / Wann beginnt es?One asks the current time; the other asks when an event happens.

12. Quick revision: the essential rules

  1. Ask Wie spät ist es? or Wie viel Uhr ist es? to ask the current time.
  2. For official schedules, use the 24-hour clock: vierzehn Uhr dreißig = 14:30.
  3. For everyday time, use nach (past), vor (to), Viertel (quarter), and halb (half to the next hour).
  4. Halb acht means 7:30, not 8:30.
  5. Use um for the time an event happens: Der Kurs beginnt um neun Uhr.
  6. Use context words like morgens, nachmittags, and abends when needed.
Study advice: Practise reading digital times aloud every day. First say each time in the official format, then convert it to everyday German. Focus especially on halb, Viertel nach, and Viertel vor until they become automatic.

Educational resource for German learners. This page introduces broadly understood standard expressions. Informal clock-time expressions may vary regionally, particularly in the use of quarter-hour expressions.
