4. Grammar: talking about hobbies

A. The word gern (to like doing something)

Gern is an adverb that tells us you enjoy an activity. It usually appears near the verb, often after the conjugated verb in a simple main clause.

GermanEnglish
Ich lese gern.I like reading.
Du tanzt gern.You like dancing.
Er spielt gern Schach. He likes playing chess.
Wir reisen gern.We like travelling.

To say you like something very much, use sehr gern. To say you do not like doing something, use nicht gern.

  • Ich höre sehr gern Jazz. — I really like listening to jazz.
  • Ich spiele nicht gern Fußball. — I do not like playing soccer.
Compare: Ich spiele Fußball. means “I play soccer.” Ich spiele gern Fußball. means “I like playing soccer.”

B. Lieben, mögen, and gern

GermanMeaning / nuance
Ich spiele gern Tennis.I like playing tennis. A natural way to talk about an activity you enjoy.
Ich mag Tennis.I like tennis. Focuses on the activity or thing itself.
Ich liebe Tennis.I love tennis. Stronger enthusiasm.

C. Present tense verb conjugation

Regular verbs change their endings according to the subject. Here is spielen (to play):

SubjectVerbExample
ichspieleIch spiele gern Volleyball.
duspielstDu spielst gern Volleyball.
er / sie / esspieltSie spielt gern Volleyball.
wirspielenWir spielen gern Volleyball.
ihrspieltIhr spielt gern Volleyball.
sie / SiespielenSie spielen gern Volleyball.

D. Word order: the verb stays in position two

In a German main clause, the conjugated verb usually occupies the second position. If you start with a time expression, the subject follows the verb.

  • Ich spiele am Samstag Tennis. — I play tennis on Saturday.
  • Am Samstag spiele ich Tennis. — On Saturday, I play tennis.
  • Nach der Arbeit gehe ich ins Fitnessstudio. — After work, I go to the gym.
“Position two” means the second sentence element, not necessarily the second word. Am Wochenende is one time element, followed by the verb spiele.

oftoftenWir gehen oft spazieren.
manchmalsometimesManchmal spiele ich Schach.
seltenrarelyIch sehe selten fern.
nieneverEr joggt nie im Winter.
jeden Tagevery daySie übt jeden Tag Klavier.
einmal pro Wocheonce a weekIch schwimme einmal pro Woche.

  • im Winter — in winter
  • um 18 Uhr — at 6 p.m.

These expressions are useful when describing your interests:

  • Ich interessiere mich für Musik. — I am interested in music.
