Important: visa rules can change.

Immigration requirements depend on your nationality, Ausbildung type, personal circumstances and current German law. This page is designed as an educational starting point, not legal advice. Before submitting an application, always verify the current requirements with the German Federal Foreign Office, the responsible German mission abroad and official German immigration resources.

FIRST QUESTION

Do you need an Ausbildung visa?

EU

EU / EFTA citizens

EU and EFTA citizens generally have different entry and residence rules from applicants coming from outside the EU/EFTA area.

INT

Non-EU applicants

Applicants from many third countries generally need the appropriate visa or residence permission for vocational training.

Nationality matters.

Do not copy another applicant's visa process without checking your own nationality and circumstances. Visa requirements can differ depending on where you are applying from and the purpose of your stay.

CORE REQUIREMENTS

What do you usually need?

01

A confirmed training place

You generally need evidence of an Ausbildung position, whether the pathway is company-based or school-based.

02

German language ability

Language requirements are an important part of the process. For qualified vocational training, B1 is normally required where the training provider has not already assessed your German.

03

Financial planning

You need to demonstrate that your living costs can be covered according to the rules applicable to your training pathway.

04

Valid documents

Passport, training documents, educational records and other supporting documents may be required.

05

Correct visa category

Your application needs to match the purpose of your stay and your intended vocational training pathway.

06

Personal circumstances

Your age, nationality, education, finances and previous immigration history can affect the process.

AUSBILDUNG TYPE

Company-based vs school-based Ausbildung.

Area Company-based Ausbildung School-based Ausbildung
Main setting Training company + vocational school Vocational school / training institution
Training agreement Agreement with the training company Admission / training arrangement with the institution
Financial planning Training compensation may contribute to livelihood proof Separate proof of sufficient funds may be relevant
Visa planning Requirements depend on the specific training and applicant Requirements depend on the specific programme and applicant
GERMAN LANGUAGE

German is one of the most important parts of your preparation.

The visa process and the Ausbildung itself are different things, but German language ability can be important to both your application and your ability to succeed in vocational training.

A1–A2

Build your basic vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation and everyday communication.

B1

Develop independent communication and prepare for the language demands associated with vocational training.

B2

Build greater confidence with professional communication, technical vocabulary and more complex conversations.

Language certificate ≠ complete communication ability.

Preparing only for an exam is not enough. Your Ausbildung will require listening, speaking, reading and writing in real situations.

DOCUMENT PREPARATION

Build your visa document folder early.

Passport Valid travel document and required copies.
Ausbildungsvertrag Training contract or relevant training confirmation.
Language certificate Evidence of German ability where required.
Educational documents School certificates and relevant qualifications.
Financial evidence Evidence appropriate to your individual pathway.
Application forms Correct forms and declarations for the visa process.
Biometric requirements Photo and biometric information where required.
Insurance Evidence required for your visa and entry situation.
Additional documents Documents requested for your specific circumstances.
The exact document list depends on your nationality, training type, application location and personal circumstances. Follow the current checklist provided by the responsible German mission.
FINANCIAL REQUIREMENTS

How does financial proof work?

One of the important parts of an Ausbildung visa application is showing that your living costs can be covered during your stay.

Company-based Ausbildung

Your Ausbildung compensation may be considered when assessing whether your livelihood is secured. If it does not cover the applicable requirement, additional proof may be relevant.

School-based Ausbildung

Depending on the pathway, applicants may need another form of financial proof, such as appropriate savings or another accepted source of support.

Do not rely on old salary or blocked-account figures.

Financial thresholds can change. Always verify the current amount and accepted forms of proof before preparing your application.

APPLICATION PROCESS

A simple way to understand the visa process.

01

Check whether you need a visa

Start with your nationality and the purpose of your planned stay.

02

Secure your Ausbildung

Obtain the appropriate evidence of your vocational training place.

03

Prepare your documents

Organise your passport, contract, qualifications, language evidence and financial documents.

04

Submit the application

Follow the current process of the responsible German mission or official online visa system.

05

Attend required appointment

Depending on the process, you may need to provide biometrics, documents or other information in person.

06

Wait for the decision

Processing times vary. Avoid relying on unofficial promises about how quickly a decision will be made.

AFTER VISA APPROVAL

Your journey does not end with the visa.

Plan your arrival

Arrange accommodation, travel, important documents, finances and practical necessities before leaving for Germany.

Understand your residence status

Your visa and subsequent residence arrangements should be understood before and after arrival.

Complete local formalities

Once in Germany, you may have to complete registration and other administrative steps relevant to your situation.

Start your Ausbildung

Keep your training contract, employer information and important immigration documents organised throughout your Ausbildung.

NO AUSBILDUNGSPLATZ YET?

There is also a pathway for some applicants to search for training.

Germany also has a specific residence pathway for eligible applicants who want to come to Germany to search for a vocational training place. This is different from the visa for someone who already has an Ausbildung position.

Do not confuse the two routes.

Visa for vocational training: you already have a training place.

Visa for seeking a vocational training place: you are coming to Germany to search for a suitable training position and must meet the separate eligibility requirements.

Eligibility for the training-place-seeking route includes specific conditions such as education, language, age and financial requirements. Check the current official rules before planning around this option.

COMMON MISTAKES

Visa mistakes that can make the process harder.

Using outdated information

Visa rules, financial thresholds and procedures can change. Check current official information.

Applying for the wrong purpose

Make sure the visa category matches your actual purpose and Ausbildung pathway.

Ignoring financial planning

Securing an Ausbildung does not automatically mean every financial requirement is solved.

Waiting until the last minute

Document preparation, translations, appointments and other steps can require advance planning.

Assuming every applicant has the same process

Nationality, training type and personal circumstances can change the requirements.

Relying on unofficial agents

Be careful with anyone promising guaranteed visas, guaranteed jobs or guaranteed processing times.
