German Two-Way Prepositions

Choose accusative for direction and dative for location with an, auf, in, neben, über, unter, vor and zwischen.

Explanation

Two-way prepositions can take either accusative or dative. The case depends on meaning, not simply on the verb.

Wo? location → dative · Wohin? direction/change of position → accusative.

an	Das Bild hängt an der Wand.	Ich hänge das Bild an die Wand.
auf	Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch.	Ich lege das Buch auf den Tisch.
in	Er sitzt im Zimmer.	Er geht in das Zimmer.
unter	Der Hund liegt unter dem Tisch.	Der Hund läuft unter den Tisch.

Der Stuhl steht neben dem Tisch.The chair stands next to the table.

Ich stelle den Stuhl neben den Tisch.I put the chair next to the table.

Er steht vor der Tür.He stands in front of the door.

Ich stelle mich vor die Tür.I position myself in front of the door.
